Three Super Summer Science Surprises!

The first Full Moon of Summer 2021 is the last supermoon of the year, appearing tonight June 24th. A supermoon occurs when a full Moon coincides with the Moon’s closet approach to Earth in its elliptical orbit, a point known as perigee. During every 27.5-day orbit around Earth, the Moon reaches both its perigee, about 226,000 miles from Earth, and its farthest point, or apogee, about 251,000 miles from Earth.

For the next few nights, the Moon will be close to Earth, making the Moon appear 7% larger and lower to the horizon. Each month's Full Moon have a special name going back to Native American sources, including the "Algonquin, Ojibwe, Dakota, and Lakota peoples" according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. This month's Strawberry Moon, doesn't look like the fruit, but is known for the short season strawberry and other berry harvests.

I'll be outside tonight with my Rainbow Glasses to get a picture of this beautiful full moon. Hopefully its clear skies--don't forget I am on the west coast of Florida and Summer weather has kicked off with daily thunderstorms.

Phases of the Moon Craft

My first surprise is I revised my Science Craft for the 8 Phases of the Moon, with a FREE Download for Labels to enough to make 3 of the craft using a paper plate and 4 round stickers. Just click the link to open the file and print on a 30 label sheet. You can learn more about the Moon from June 2020's Blog here.

BOGO Virtual Science Experience Classes

Another surprise this summer is the recent announcement of BOGO Virtual Classes!  Every Tuesday I will have two classes occuring one at 11AM EST with Session A classes; the second class at 1PM EST with the new Session C. Purchase 1 dropin and you'll receive 2 Zoom Meeting IDs plus 2 Science Toys! Purchase the next week's Dropin here, Just add the date in the comments. The toys are not required with the class so need not to worry about getting them beforehand. I do appreciate and will honor payments for classes that have been paid the day before at the latest. I wouldn't want you to miss the 11AM class.

Finally what else is bigger news than a BOGO offer and a Super Strawberry Moon this summer??? Starting this Fall, I will be providing a NEW Virtual option, PhilanthroPOD, a K-3 Early Learning Science Enrichment Group!!! I will hold 3 8-week sessions, meeting Thursdays at 11:00AM EST in the Fall, Winter, and Spring teaching Life, Physical, and Earth Science according to the educational K-3 science standards. Want to be on the Information List, please send an email to philanthrolab@gmail.com.
